Most of our rare Statues of the Buddha and exceptional artworks are meticulously sculpted from aged and dense wood to honor the spirit of Angkor, centuries of sacred and royal art, as well as Cambodia’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. These contemporary creations, though reminiscent of ancient artifacts, are crafted using traditional Khmer techniques passed down through generations, that are now at risk of disappearing.
As wood carving expertise becomes increasingly rare, our master artisans, including the renowned Master Carver Chea Sok, are deeply committed to preserving and passing on this ancestral know-how. They transform ancient and dense wood (pchök in Khmer, Shorea obtusa in Latin) into remarkable masterpieces. By reclaiming beams and pillars from century-old Khmer traditional houses and bridges, they carefully source wood steeped in history, creating artworks imbued with unique tones, textures, and aura. The intricate sculpting process includes multiple layers of lacquering, polychromy, and, in some cases, gold leaf finishing, giving each piece the patina, depth, and spiritual resonance of ancient statues.
