Description
This sculpture represents King Jayavarman VII, one of the most celebrated and influential monarchs of the Khmer Empire (reigned c. 1181–1218). Known as “The Builder King”, he led an ambitious construction campaign that produced some of the most remarkable Khmer monuments. Beyond his military successes, the Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm, and other vast architectural projects, his reign marked a significant shift toward Buddhism as the state religion. Depicted in his youth, his facial features remain firm, with a well-defined mouth contour. The statue captures the duality of his character: a resolute ruler, yet a compassionate Buddhist devoted to alleviating his people’s suffering. His serene expression reflects the inner meditation that made him profoundly human. This molding was crafted at the Conservatory of the National Museum of Phnom Penh, preserving the legacy of this Great King, as well as the artistry of master artisans from ancient times.
